On February 9, 2004, 21-year-old UMass Amherst nursing student Maura Murray told her professors that she had to leave town due to a family emergency, and anticipated being gone for a week. Family later reported to police that there was no family emergency.
She had searched MapQuest for directions to New Hampshire, and also made a call to a hotel in Stowe, Vermont. A few hours later, she crashed her car in a snow bank on Route 122 in New Hampshire, near the White Mountain National Forest.
According to witnesses, Maura emerged from the car uninjured, telling bystanders that they don’t need to call the police. She abandoned her vehicle and left the scene on foot before responders arrived. Alcohol was discovered in the car, but there was no sign of its driver. Murray was never seen again.
